{"id":153,"date":"2026-10-15T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-15T07:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/starkdrc.com\/cours-cuivre-cobalt-octobre-2026\/"},"modified":"2026-10-20T16:27:33","modified_gmt":"2026-10-20T14:27:33","slug":"cours-cuivre-cobalt-octobre-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/starkdrc.com\/en\/cours-cuivre-cobalt-octobre-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Copper and cobalt prices: copper nears record highs as Congolese quotas tighten cobalt"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Copper: record levels<\/h2>\n<p>Copper reached a <strong>record of US$14,617 per tonne on the London Metal Exchange (LME) in September 2026<\/strong>, with a monthly average of US$14,440\/t, compared with US$14,170\/t in August (up around 2%).<\/p>\n<p>In mid-October, the trend remains firm: on 14 October, three-month copper was trading at around <strong>US$14,473\/t<\/strong> (up 1.2% on the day), heading for a weekly gain of about 1.5%. Several factors are supporting prices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mine supply risks<\/strong> : the union at the Centinela mine (Antofagasta, Chile) has announced a strike that could affect output from November;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chinese demand<\/strong> : the Yangshan premium reached its highest level in four years as China returned from holidays;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inventories<\/strong> : LME stocks fell to a six-week low, while COMEX stocks hit a record high.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Cobalt: the DRC manages supply through quotas<\/h2>\n<p>As the world's largest cobalt producer, the DRC regulates its exports through a quota system. For 2026, the cap is set at <strong>96,600 tonnes per year<\/strong>, including a 10% strategic allocation \u2014 less than half of 2024 output. At the end of June, ARECOMS withdrew unused first-half quotas and transferred them to a state-controlled strategic pool.<\/p>\n<p>In early August, an order banning exports of copper and cobalt concentrates further reinforced this local value-addition policy (see our dedicated article).<\/p>\n<div class=\"stk-callout\"><strong>Key takeaways for operators:<\/strong> high prices and a strong incentive for local processing are driving investment in processing plants, power and maintenance.
